A sub-bottom profiler is an echosounder that penetrates deep beneath the seafloor. The backscatter data serves to identify and characterize layers of sediment or rock. The frequency influences the range and resolution. For instance, the CHIRP 3260 can support multiple frequencies, reaching depths up to 10 km.
