December 23, 2020 - Jody Paterson

Deep in the ocean off Vancouver Island’s west coast, a gas associated with climate warming is making its way to the surface. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a product of plankton decomposition, pulled to the surface in areas where deep-sea waters migrate upwards in what’s known as coastal upwelling.

Where is it coming from? That’s a question that University of Victoria PhD student Brett Jameson is exploring, in collaboration with Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), a UVic initiative, and the Canadian...

Teens dive into ocean science

It’s never too early to help young ocean scientists get to know the ocean. In April 2017, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) hosted its fifth annual Ocean Science Symposium, an engaging two-day opportunity to inspire the next generation of ocean scientists.

Great Moments in UVic's History

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the University of Victoria. To celebrate a half-century of achievements and shared experiences, the University has compiled a collection of Great Moments, viewed through the memories of people intimately connected to the campus.

Included in these milestones are the very beginnings of VENUS: the Victoria Experimental Network under the Sea.

With thanks to Dr. Verena Tunnicliffe, Canada Research Chair in Deep Oceans, Professor of Biology and Director, VENUS, for her reflections on how world-changing ideas can be born from a shared vision...

From a tremor to “the big idea” in ocean science

Gifted Students Learn From Ocean Networks Canada Team

On a July morning, Ocean Network Canada staff met with high-achieving students from across Canada as part of a PEEL Summer Academy program hosted at the University of Victoria.

Ocean Networks Canada’s Natasha Ewing and Tom Dakin were invited to introduce ocean observatory science and technology to twenty students who are of grade nine age, but working at a university level. The students—many from the Ontario region— were taking part in a two-week West Coast Marine Discovery Camp, which included time to absorb the sites around Victoria while learning about first nations culture and some of the ocean-related programs offered at UVic and ...

Improving Data Analysis With IBM Streams

The Ocean Networks Canada Innovation Centre, in co-operation with IBM, is striving to implement new software for real-time analysis of video data.

This technology can increase classification rates by providing a continuous stream of objects-of-interest. The IBM InfoSphere Streams system along with new image processing software will be used to automatically flag specific times in the underwater video archives. The processed video will be tagged with the appropriate metadata (e.g. object type, object size, movement, time). The result will be the ability to skip ahead to the next remarkable...
