ONC Staff Profile

Akash Sastri

Senior Staff Scientist, Science Services

Akash is Ocean Networks Canada's staff scientist supporting interdisciplinary research in the “Plankton Dynamics and Biogeochemistry” research theme. He has a background in biological oceanography with a focus on the roles of marine plankton communities in changing environments.

Akash completed his undergraduate studies and a M.Sc. in Zoology at the University of Guelph, Ontario. His Ph.D. (2007) thesis at the University of Victoria, focussed on the development and application of novel ways to measure zooplankton productivity routinely at sea. Much of his research was carried out in the Strait of Georgia and waters extending offshore from the west coast of Vancouver Island. Following his studies at the University of Victoria, Akash began a post-doctoral position at the National Taiwan University in Taipei where he explored the application of novel plankton imaging tools. This work figured in inter-disciplinary programs exploring ecosystem-level responses to environmental change in the East China Sea. He then returned to Canada as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Quebec at Montreal where he studied freshwater plankton community responses to whole-lake manipulations of thermal structure. Most of Akash’s research is field-based and he has participated in numerous research cruises throughout the northeast and subarctic Pacific, western Arctic and the East China Sea.
