Both VENUS and NEPTUNE Canada networks are developing new technologies, techniques and database systems that are of interest to, and will increasingly be required of, the petroleum industry. Ocean monitoring can be expected to be required of the industry by regulatory bodies prior to development work and extend through the development and decommissioning phases of offshore exploration and drilling.

Naturally-occurring, ice-like gas hydrates, which represent both a possible alternative energy source and a natural hazard, are being investigated at NEPTUNE Canada's Barkley Canyon site.
