IdeaFest Presentation: Sound and the Sea

Mar 9, 2017 7:00pm - 8:30pm PST

UVic's Harry Hickman Building (HHB)105

What are the sounds of the sea? From the haunting songs of marine mammals to the ear-piercing noises of shipping traffic and sonar, the ocean is a 24-hour orchestra. Join Ocean Networks Canada, UVic researchers, and Cowichan knowledge holders to learn about recent research on the marine soundscape, the cultural importance of sound in place-based knowledge, and how bioacoustics are being incorporated into the classroom, as we explore a noisy world beneath the waves.

Presenters: Maia Hoeberechts, Jessica Brown and Natasha Ewing (Oceans Networks Canada), Kristen Kanes (Oceans Networks Canada and UVic School of Earth and Ocean Sciences), Luschiim Arvid (Quw’utsun [Cowichan]), Alex Boudreault-Fournier (Department of Anthropology) and Jenni Schine (Salmon Coast Field Station).
