What is it?

Central to our Smart Ocean SystemsTM digital infrastructure offering is Oceans 2.0 – a unique and critical component developed to connect the subsea instruments systems, providing the capability for the 24/7 acquisition of extremely diverse and vast amounts of data, quality control and calibration, storage, visualization and access by a potentially global audience, as well as providing a convenient interface to handle otherwise complex tasks associated with the remote monitoring and control of the observatory infrastructure itself.

The core value of Oceans 2.0 lies not only in its ability to create greater and easier access to complex information, but also in the fact that the fundamental design was based on a principle of flexibility and scalability. This allows for not only disparate instrumentation to be accommodated, but also facilitates ease of customization to accommodate diverse end-user requirements, span core research, industrial monitoring, emergency preparedness, etc., in small or large scale observatory implementations.

Typical Installation

Built on a robust Service-Oriented Architecture relying on Web Services, Oceans 2.0 provides an elegant platform that can respond dynamically and autonomously to the configuration changes associated with the varied nature and large number of deployed sensors (fixed and mobile), as well as accommodate the frequency of new instrument arrivals or displacements.

Providing powerful, efficient and intelligent data processing and analysis systems, Oceans 2.0 is able to manage the vast amount of data produced, and can mine the live and archived data streams to detect trends, classify content and extract features, feeding the results back into the master database, thereby turning raw data into information and setting the stage to allow the information to be transformed into knowledge.

Oceans 2.0 is scalable to handle hundreds of connected instruments and is designed to keep track of all changes and events occurring anywhere on the system. The archiving system is flexible and can easily support the wide variety of data types typically found in oceangoing instrumentation.

Fundamental workflow orchestration techniques provide the critical capability to assemble and execute otherwise complex processing chains, providing the flexibility required to meet an organization’s unique requirements.

Oceans 2.0 provides both data management and subsea infrastructure monitoring/control functionality via web interfaces, offering an easy-to-use interface to the observatory. Currently, a large range of standard instrumentation is already supported, overcoming a common and significant challenge for new entrants into the observatory market.

As a robust, easily customizable package, Oceans 2.0 can fit the needs of any sensor network, even those not permanently on-line (e.g., buoys, gliders and AUV). Reliable (redundant) data hosting on behalf of your organization is also available, together with 24hr remote management and support services.

Getting Started

Oceans 2.0 is made available to clients under the following pre-packaged offerings:

  • A software service where the software and data is hosted by ONC, and includes management of all data storage, backup, disaster recovery, help desk, software maintenance and release planning.
  • A software sale under license, similar to the above, except the licensee will be responsible for the “Shore Station” component of Oceans 2.0 (primarily concerning data acquisition), with the resultant data transferred to ONC for hosting and access purposes.
  • A software sale under license, where the client installs and operates the system, including hosting of all resultant data. ONC would provide initial training for system operation and maintenance, with all other functions assumed by the client ongoing.

NOTE – In the first (2) cases above, the data hosted by ONC is made publically available. The system can be configured for privacy and security as required.

After the first year of operations the Centre offers optional ongoing support for Oceans 2.0 systems that can include online email support, system upgrades, instrument driver updates, and developer time for customization.
