Oceans 3.0
ONC’s world-leading data management system.

ONC’s data management system Oceans 3.0. enables real-time acquisition and secure storage of data flowing in from subsea sensors, This sophisticated digital infrastructure provides users with tools to explore and display complex data in a variety of ways. It also allows ONC staff to manage installed infrastructure, perform quality assurance, and incorporate instrument specific workflows, record metadata and create DOI (digital object identifiers) to an ever evolving data set.

As part of ONC’s ongoing commitment to leading the way in data stewardship, ONC is committed to open access to data, achieving FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data and implementing the CoreTrustSeal certification process for data repositories—places where large amounts of data are stored. Oceans 3.0 is one such repository, managing and archiving a daily firehose averaging more than 300 gigabytes of free, open, continuous, real-time ocean data from over 9000 sensors on all three coasts.

In 2021 ONC endorsed a new set of best practices for digital data repositories. These TRUST Principles (Transparency, Responsibility, User focus, Sustainability and Technology) provide a common framework to facilitate discussion and implementation of best practices for digital repositories by all stakeholders.
