BC Ferries is one of the largest ferry operators in the world, providing year-round vehicle and passenger service on 25 routes to 47 terminals, with a fleet of 35 vessels. The BC Ferries are an essential transportation link that connects coastal communities and facilitates the movement of people, goods and services.
Ocean Networks Canada has partnered with BC Ferries by instrumenting vessels transiting between Vancouver Island and the mainland. The high resolution data collected every 10 seconds by these instruments will allow researchers to monitor changes occurring throughout the Strait within any given day, and allow comparisons between seasons and years. This quality of monitoring will allow identification of conditions which demand rapid responses such as storm surges, and improve our understanding of Fraser River salmon runs.
