ONC Staff Profile
Scientific Data Specialist, User Services
Zelalem (Ze) joined ONC in December, 2018 as a Scientific Data Specialist.
Ze is finishing his PhD in Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria. His research focuses on modelling carbon and oxygen extremes in coastal upwelling regions with a special emphasis on understanding drivers of these extremes.
During his time at UVic, Ze discovered his other passion - data and data science. At Ocean Networks Canada, Ze blends his academic background with strong programming skills to help advance ocean sciences.
Before he joined Ocean Networks Canada, Ze obtained his Masters in physics, majoring in atmospheric science, from Dalhousie University and his postgraduate diploma in Earth System Physics from the International Center for Theoretical Physics, where he studied almost every major topic on Earth Sciences. For his BSc, Ze studied meteorology at Arba Minch University in his native Ethiopia. Ze has experience in post-secondary level teaching and played an academic leadership role in the past.
Ze is a popular figure in Victoria's pick up soccer scene for his magical left foot, and has played in Vancouver Island Soccer League in the past. He is happy to live in the beautiful west coast with his family.
