Rock solid climate solutions: Negative emissions technology

NEWS RELEASE
September 26, 2019

A team of international researchers plan to turn the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into rock by permanently injecting it beneath the Earth’s ocean floor through an ambitious, new research partnership announced today by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) at the University of Victoria.

The $1.5 million, four-year PICS Theme Partnership entitled “Solid Carbon: A Climate Mitigation Partnership Advancing Stable Negative Emissions” brings together researchers from Canada, the United States and...

Funding boost helps advance ocean intelligence

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) will receive a $7.2 million boost to advance its ocean observatory science and technology activities, the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) announced today.

The additional investment will ensure that ONC, a University of Victoria initiative, continues its long-term real-time ocean observing and delivery of data products for ocean health and public safety.

“This investment in science supports Ocean Networks Canada’s world-leading ocean observing infrastructure, bringing data to the surface to share openly over the Internet, supporting research and informing decision-making at this crucial time,” says ONC president/CEO Kate Moran.

ONC’s ocean observatories...

Methane-snacking crabs suggest hedge against climate change

Tanner crabs observed feasting at a bubbling methane seep on the deep seafloor in the northeast Pacific Ocean may be developing a way to adapt to climate change, says a marine ecologist from the University of Victoria whose work with Oregon-based researchers establishes for the first time that a commercially-harvested species is feeding on the energy source.

Researchers with Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), an initiative of University of Victoria (UVic), and...

New UVic location for world-leading ocean and climate research

World-leading ocean and climate researchers at the University of Victoria have a new centre where they will continue producing the critical knowledge used by communities, governments and industry for sustainable ocean management and to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

The $9.5 million Ocean-Climate Building at Queenswood establishes a new research and technology site within walking distance of the UVic campus.

At today’s official opening, the Government of Canada announced $12.6 million over four years for Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), the anchor group in the building. The investment under Canada’s Ocean Protections Plan (...

Showcasing Canada's Ocean Intelligence in Washington, DC

Sophisticated technology is making it easier to gather data that informs our understanding of the changing ocean and its relationship to our well-being. But the ocean knows no borders. Ocean Networks Canada seeks to expand the bridge that links Canadian and United States ocean intelligence across borders, to create synergies of knowledge and discoveries that inform local, national and international perspectives.

On 11 December 2018, Ocean Networks Canada and the University of Victoria hosted a talk and reception at the Embassy of Canada in Washington, DC. Ocean science leaders from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Ocean Observing Initiative, Esri and ONC discussed big data delivery for climate solutions, cross-...

Deep space meets deep sea in summer expedition

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) is installing specialized equipment at its deepest site in the northeast Pacific Ocean to assess the location’s suitability for observing one of the universe’s most essential and difficult-to-study ingredients—neutrinos.

An initiative of the University of Victoria, ONC is deploying the equipment as part of Expedition 2018: Wiring the Abyss, its annual offshore expedition to install and improve cabled observatory infrastructure.

Neutrinos are one of the universe’s most essential ingredients and most abundant subatomic particles, produced by nuclear reactions from solar fusion,...

New science mission launched to study unique seamounts in the northeast Pacific Ocean

Seamounts are underwater mountains that are home to an abundance of marine species, from cold-water corals and sponges to Bocaccio and killer whales. These ecosystems are important to maintaining biodiversity in the ocean and contribute greatly to its health. Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Haida Nation, Oceana Canada and Ocean Networks Canada are working together to further ocean research and help protect seamounts in the Pacific Ocean.

The Northeast Pacific Seamounts Expedition, taking place from July 5 to 21, 2018, will explore three seamounts in the Northeast Pacific Ocean: SGaan Kinghlas-Bowie, Dellwood and Explorer.

During the 16-day expedition aboard Ocean Exploration Trust’s vessel,...

Celebrating World Oceans Day by partnering to explore and protect mysterious underwater mountains in Canada

Today, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Haida Nation, Oceana Canada and Ocean Networks Canada announced a new partnership to share resources, knowledge and expertise to better understand and protect seamounts (underwater mountains) near the islands of Haida Gwaii.

From July 5-21, 2018, Canadians can join the partners as they explore the mystery and wonder of the seamounts. Daily livestream footage of the seafloor and updates from the expedition team will be available during the expedition on ProtectOceans.ca.

Protecting seamounts is internationally recognized as important for healthy oceans. Seamounts are offshore biodiversity hotspots....

Ocean Networks Canada partners with Tsleil-Waututh Nation to monitor Burrard Inlet

2 May 2018

Ocean Networks Canada and the Tsleil-Waututh Nation are announcing the formation of a new partnership to monitor and improve the health of Burrard Inlet. The objective is to better understand the cumulative effects of climate change, industry, and development on environmental conditions in and around the inlet.

The new partnership is supported by a $1.5-million investment by the federal government in scientific observing systems and training for Tsleil-Waututh community members. The systems include a state-of-the-art internet-connected seafloor observatory and a mobile application that allows vessel operators to collect ocean data. The two systems will provide comprehensive ocean data...
