ONC Now Hosting Data from Three Oceans

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), an initiative of the University of Victoria, has further expanded its footprint across Canada with the launch of a new collaboration with the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE).

ONC is a world-leader in ocean observing technology supported by Oceans 2.0, its comprehensive data management system developed to provide a vital link between sensors and users around the world. With advanced observatories on the Pacific coast and in the Canadian Arctic, today’s launch on the Atlantic coast establishes ONC’s operations from sea to sea to sea.

This collaboration, initiated by ONC’s Innovation Centre, will provide FORCE with a...

Oceans13 MTS/IEEE

Ocean Networks Canada was very active at this fall’s MTS/IEEE Oceans meeting held in sunny San Diego, California, from 23 to 26 September.

The annual OCEANS conference is jointly sponsored by the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (IEEE/OES) and the Marine Technology Society (MTS). This international meeting is a major forum for scientists, engineers and those with an interest in the oceans to exchange their knowledge regarding the future of the world’s oceans, and showcase the latest oceanographic technology.

From Marine Operations to Data Infrastructure, Science to Sensor & Instrument Technology: the ONC delegation included eight attendees from across the organization, plus key collaborators Alexandra Branzan Albu (Associate Professor, UVic Electrical and Computer...

Listening to Deep Ocean Whales

“We can’t get there but our technology can” ~ Kristen Kanes, Co-op student

Passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals is a growing research theme on both the VENUS and NEPTUNE observatories.

UVic Co-op student Kristen Kanes works with the Ocean Networks Canada Innovation Centre (formerly Centre for Enterprise and Engagement, ONCCEE) to process passive acoustic data from their technology demonstrations. Together with John Dorocicz, Acoustic Systems Developer, the two “listeners” publicize the highlights from these data within relevant research communities.

Kristen and John are helping promote Canadian technologies, which is part of ONCCEE’s mandate as a national Center of Excellence for...
