OCEAN NETWORKS CANADA MEDIA FACTSHEET
 

This Ocean Networks Canada factsheet is to provide correct information related to recent media reports. Ocean Networks Canada is an initiative of the University of Victoria.

  • Ocean Networks Canada recently installed very short-range (5m) oceanographic sensors to measure chemical properties of water and rocks in the deep ocean (more than 2,000m) at the Endeavour hydrothermal vents as part of this past summer’s annual maintenance expedition.
  • The equipment was built by researchers at China’s Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering (IDSSE).

Forging Partnerships with China

BEIJING - The BC Government today announced a number of agreements between BC and Chinese organizations and businesses, including a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada and the National Ocean and Technology Centre and State Oceanic Administration, for complementary research activity.

With countries around the planet investing hundreds of billions of dollars in the new “Blue Economy,” the director of ONC’s Innovation Centre, Scott McLean has noted a growing interest in ocean observing technology during a trade mission to China, supported by the BC Government this past September.

China Trade Mission Showcases B.C. Ocean Technology

The University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) is off to China to lead a 12-day ocean technology trade mission, with support provided by the government of British Columbia.

The ONC Innovation Centre will join a number of other BC organizations in showcasing the province’s leading edge ocean science and technology sector.

Business Students From China Tour ONC

Students from one of the oldest universities in the world recently toured Ocean Networks Canada with staff hosts Claire de Grasse and Tom Dakin, business development specialists in ICT and Sensors and Instruments.

Visiting from Hunan University— located in Changsha, China and said to be over 1,000 years old—these students are mostly senior managers or executives in a variety of public and private sector organizations.

Chinese Scientists Visit

On Monday, July 9, a delegation from the distiniguished Chinese Academy of Sciences came to Ocean Networks Canada as part of a mission to the U.S. and Canadian west coast. The Academy is the Republic of China’s highest academic institution in natural sciences and its top scientific and technological advisory body.
