Sensors, science and sampling: March 2020 expedition highlights

From 1-13 March, Natural Resources Canada and Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) embarked on the annual spring expedition aboard CCGS John P. Tully to maintain infrastructure at observatory sites in the southern Salish Sea and offshore locations at Folger Deep and Barkley Canyon.

These maintenance expeditions allow for a hands-on approach—remotely operated vehicle (ROVs) hands, that is—to ensure things are running smoothly on the underwater networks, to deploy new instruments, and to enable sampling for calibrations, ongoing studies, and experiments.

Led by ONC’s marine operations experts, the 18-member team of scientists, engineers, technicians, data specialists and Canadian Coast Guard crew were able to complete 52 out of 56 planned operations, resulting in a...

Collaborating to understand the central coast of British Columbia

Marine life flourishes in the deep fjords and narrow inlets off the central coast of British Columbia. However, underwater research in this area has been extremely limited, until now. In March 2018, an exciting collaboration brought together a variety of perspectives to expand our understanding of the unique coastal ecosystem within the area known as the Great Bear Rainforest (Figure 1).

Figure 1. This interactive map on the expedition’s dedicated website tracked the progress of the CCGS Vector through Heiltsuk and Kitasoo/Xai’Xais Territory along the central coast of British Columbia.

Join us aboard the CCGS Vector from 7-14 March 2018 to explore the fjords of the Central Coast of British Columbia!

This is an exciting opportunity to experience an area of high significance for the Heiltsuk and Kitasoo/Xai’Xais Nations. A partnership between Oceana Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the Heiltsuk and Kitasoo/Xai’Xais First Nations, Central Coast Indigenous Resource Alliance (CCIRA) and Ocean Networks Canada, the expedition's goal is to gather data in areas important for rockfish, corals and sponges, which will help inform marine planning efforts.

A summary of Ocean Networks Canada’s maintenance expedition in the northeast Pacific: Wiring the Abyss, Leg 2, 6-26 June 2017.

Big swells rock exploration vessel (E/V) Nautilus and cable ship (C/S) Cable Innovator during a tricky seafloor operation to lay three kilometres of cable at the Cascadia subduction zone (Figure 1). Over a kilometer below the choppy ocean surface, this fibre-optic cable connects a variety of deep sea sensors, including several accelerometers that will contribute to British Columbia’s earthquake early warning system.

The Deepest Way to Celebrate #Canada150

As we celebrate Canada’s 150 years of confederation, we must do so with full knowledge and pride that our country has been home to Indigenous peoples with advanced governing structures for tens of thousands of years.

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) celebrates the country’s founding peoples year-round by supporting communities as they continue to inform themselves about their coasts and ocean waters. We do this through ONC’s community observatories along British Columbia’s coast and by ensuring that science is conducted with traditional knowledge (Figure 1...

Monitoring Saanich Inlet and the Strait of Georgia: Fall inshore expedition (2016)

Twice a year, every spring and fall, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) heads to sea aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Vessel (CCGV) John Tully to maintain and upgrade ocean monitoring instrumentation in Saanich Inlet and the Strait of Georgia. Between 4 - 11 October 2016, in addition to the infrastructure maintenance priorities of the expedition, the ONC team also successfully deployed new instrumentation, carried out several activities in support of our science community, and collected samples for benchmarking and calibration of instruments.

Explore the ocean depths—live—while ONC wires the abyss!

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) is poised to head out to sea on a month-long expedition with two world-class ships, to conduct annual operations and maintenance on the observatories off the west coast of Canada.

Both the exploration vessel E/V Nautilus, and the research vessel R/V Thompson will be providing a rare undersea portal to the Salish Sea and the Pacific Ocean, by way of remotely operated vehicles equipped with high definition video cameras.

Expedition Sets Sail for Northeast Pacific

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –

WIRING THE ABYSS 2014-May Expedition

Victoria, BC – May 2 – At 11:00 AM today, the red and white Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) John P. Tully pulled away from its dock in North Saanich, headed for the open ocean off southern Vancouver Island.

For the University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), which operates the NEPTUNE and VENUS cabled ocean observatories, this month-long maintenance expedition will support both long-term research themes and short-term experiments, on the five working sites of the NEPTUNE (Northeast Pacific Ocean) observatory.
