Click here for the full screen interactive experience.

Looking for a 2020 good news story? Read on!

Despite the usual complexity of working in the deep sea—with a global pandemic to boot—Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) successfully maintained, upgraded and expanded hundreds of offshore, inshore and coastal ocean observing instruments and sensors this year. This interactive ESRI story map summarizes the year’s highlights and successes in advancing technology, science, community engagement and partnerships on all three of Canada’s coasts.

Wiring the Abyss 2016 Leg 1 - Summary and Highlights

The first leg of Ocean Networks Canada’s 2016 offshore Wiring the Abyss expedition was a landmark success, a fitting tribute to the organization’s tenth anniversary. Round-the-clock ship operations were conducted at four of the five NEPTUNE node locations aboard the exploration vessel E/V Nautilus. The C/S Wave Venture conducted joint cable operations with the Nautilus from 12-27 May at three node locations. Both ships mobilized at the Victoria Ogden Point facility.

Maintaining the VENUS Observatory: March 2014 Expedition

Twice a year, the Ocean Networks Canada engineering and science teams head out to sea to service and maintain our coastal observatory in the Salish Sea.

Just west of the dock at the Institute of Ocean Sciences, the Saanich Inlet array lies in 100 m of water. Operating since 2006, this fjord network was the first comprehensive cabled ocean observatory in the world. A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) is deployed from the deck of the Canadian Coast Guard Ship, John P. Tully and lowered to the bottom, where it can access and service the instrument suites connected to the network.

Research here includes benthic ecology, plankton dynamics, and monitoring complex seasonal biogeochemical cycles. At each station, VENUS maintains a standard...

Strait of Georgia Array Online

After several months of “silence”, our instruments in the Strait of Georgia are alive again, with data streaming into the database, and out to users via the website.

According to Paul Macoun, “it was a short and intense cruise aboard the Oceanic Surveyor”. A small team of two from Ocean Networks Canada, and the crew of the Remotely Operated Vehicle Oceanic Explorer reinstalled instrument platforms at the Central and Eastern nodes in the Strait, and recovered three experiments from Saanich Inlet.

The Strait of Georgia Array Comes to the Surface

The afterdeck of CCGS Tully holds two node pods, five instrument platforms and two hydrophone arrays plus the ROV ROPOS.

In the first week of August, the VENUS Observatory's Strait of Georgia array suffered a major power fault (see System Status). As a result, the field team retrieved all instruments on the seafloor leaving only the cable and the node frames. It was a challenge to the ship’s bosun to pack all...
