Wiring the Abyss Leg 1: 19 June - 3 July 2018

During this 2-week expedition aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Vessel John P. Tully using Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility's ROV ROPOS, a team of 35 scientists, engineers, technicians and data specialists will conduct around-the-clock operations to maintain, install and improve instrumentation on the offshore cabled observing networks at Barkley Canyon, Cascadia Basin, Endeavour and Clayoquot Slope.

Highlights of Leg 1 include an exciting new neutrino experiment at Cascadia Basin to determine whether this location can support a large-scale neutrino detector array in the future; expanded instrumentation at Endeavour, including new...

ONC and Schmidt Ocean Institute Team up for Leading Science Research

The University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada and the Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) are undertaking an expedition on board the $62-million research vessel Falkor, with researchers from Canadian universities studying low-oxygen, acidic waters that form naturally off the coast of Vancouver Island.

“This is an unprecedented opportunity for researchers to integrate the data gained from the sophisticated acoustic sampling and deep-sea observation tools on board the Falkor, with the scientific data streaming from the seafloor sites across our VENUS and NEPTUNE observatories,” says Dr. Kim Juniper, science director at Ocean Networks Canada.

Wiring the Abyss: Part 2

On June 26, we completed our summer expedition, Wiring the Abyss 2012 aboard the R/V Thomas G. Thompson (University of Washington). Despite the inevitable challenges we encounter when deploying deep sea instruments, overall the cruise was a success.

Wiring the Abyss: Part 1

On June 11, NEPTUNE Canada reached the halfway point for Wiring the Abyss 2012, this summer’s installation and maintenance cruise. Part of the original crew who set sail on May 27 returned to dry land at Bamfield after a very busy two weeks. They were replaced by a new contingent of crew members, who will remain with the ship until cruise end on 26 June. If you have been following on our cruise page, you’ll know that the first two weeks were very busy indeed!

Endeavour Hot Vents Featured in State of the Ocean Series

Ocean Network Canada’s Kim Juniper and Verena Tunnicliffe share their experiences studying the Endeavour hydrothermal vents in the April 19th Vancouver Sun article One of Earth’s Most Remarkable Places.

This story is the fifth of a six part special series on the "Health of the Ocean." The paper’s online publication has also compiled a photo gallery of this unique ecosystem located 250 km off Vancouver Island and over two km below the ocean’s surface.

Piezometer Installation

R/V Thompson in front of the Olympic Mountains.

Scientists from Canada and France began deploying a cabled piezometer at 9:45 am (PDT) on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the Cascadia Basin site. This is the first operation of the NEPTUNE Canada July 2011 installation and maintenance expedition on the R/V Thompson. In visible company was the R/V Atlantis, the sister ship of the R/V Thompson, with a crew of researchers working on nearby Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) boreholes, an illustration of the high interest in the thin oceanic crust of the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate.

The needle-like probe...

September 2011 Expedition Complete

Our fall 2011 installation and maintenance expedition sailed September 10 – 30 aboard the R/V Thompson. It was a very active time for 7 Ocean Networks Canada staffers, 4 contractors, 1 Pacific Geosciences Centre technician, 1 volunteer, an 8-man ROPOS crew, 2 marine techs and the 21 crew members of the R/V Thompson. During our 20 days at sea, we completed 13 ROPOS dives at three locations, including a trip into Bamfield for parts.

Our itinerary during the September 2011 cruise.

During our adventures, we deployed 32 new instruments, including those attached to a Regional Circulation Mooring, retrieved-refurbished-...

Free Wally Keeps on Ticking

Wally the Crawler underwent the ultimate stress test on Sunday. After entering the water tethered beneath the Remotely Operated Vehicle ROPOS, strong waves apparently sprung Wally loose. He took an 870 m free dive from the sea surface to the seafloor at Barkley Hydrates.

Wally dangling over the water

Wally the Crawler dangles below ROPOS just prior to entering the ocean at Barkley Hydrates, 18 September 2011.

Shortly after entering the water, we checked for Wally in the downward-looking camera, and he was gone. As the dive logger described it, “The hook came off, Wally is by himself.” Onlookers both on ship...

From July 4 - 25, 2011, Ocean Networks Canada navigated an impressive installation and maintenance expedition in the northeast Pacific Ocean. Diving down to the seafloor to investigate our 800-km cabled network observatory along the northern Juan de Fuca plate, we tended to our technically-advanced instruments and witnessed some of the amazing marine life dwelling off the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
