This image is the final design concept drawing of the buoy profiler system prepared by Chris Sundstrom of the Ocean Networks Canada engineering team. This system is part of the VENUS Phase II – Geospatial Expansion development. The surface system will support a water column profiling package and will be moored in a central Saanich Inlet location.
The diagram shows the required modifications to one of the surface CEPEX buoys purchased from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Similar to the Ocean Technology Test-Bed (OTTB) buoy, this VENUS buoy system drawing is part of our tri-mooring permit application to Navigable Waters that will establish the buoy as a permanent feature west of Coles Bay in 210 m of water. The system will consist of a meteorological station, surface winch, and control system connected to the VENUS Node in Patricia Bay. The system will allow routine and experimental profiling and time series of water properties throughout the water column.
