Wow, tomorrow will be my first trip out to Sea on a working science expedition! I’m excited to be joining Ocean Networks Canada’s Wiring the Abyss September Service expedition in the Salish Sea. We’ll be aboard The CCGS Tully - only for a day- but I still can’t wait!

As my co-op with Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) comes to a close I recognize how time flies. I began this job 8 months ago and since then worked on a number of projects, gained valuable skills, and had the opportunity to work alongside numerous amazing people.

On 14 November 2013, Easton White, a visiting Fulbright Scholar at the University of Victoria working with the Baum Lab, led a workshop on implementing ecological population models. Easton talked about some of his research, which has covered a wide range of biological systems, including work on pikas (Ochotona princeps), in California, and lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) in the Bahamas.

On October the 17th, a presentation about Ocean Networks Canada data was given for students spending the fall semester at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. Participants were introduced to data from the NEPTUNE cabled observatory and the Arctic community observatory.

The EcoEvo Retreat is a conference that gives graduate students, undergrads, and post-docs the opportunity to share their research in ecology and evolutionary biology. Participating institutions include the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria. The 2013 conference took place November 1–3 at the Cheakamus Centre, in Brackendale BC, near Squamish.

Two workshops, featuring Ocean Networks Canada data were held at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on August 1, 2013. Workshop participants included students studying at the following universities: Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria, McGill University, the University of Calgary, Vancouver Island University, the University of Alberta, Mount Royal University, and the University of Saskatchewan.
