Arctic Ocean Biodiversity
Hear the story of Sedna from Inuit knowledge holders and explore Arctic ocean biodiversity in this module.

How does the Inuit story of Sedna introduce us to Arctic biodiversity?

Experience the story of Sedna, shared in many versions across Inuit Nunangat, and explore the importance of Arctic ocean life. In this module, you will learn to define species abundance, species richness, and biodiversity, and apply these concepts by conducting a transect and quadrat study using authentic data from the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut.

This module has been developed for BC Science Grade 7.

Notes on language

Inuktut is the language spoken by Inuit people and it has many dialects. The people of Cambridge Bay speak the Inuinnaqtun dialect and use Roman orthography when writing their language. The people of Gjoa Haven speak the Inuktitut dialect and use syllabics when writing their language. Although both communities have some unilingual Inuinnaqtun or Inuktitut speakers, English is commonly spoken. In fact, communities are working hard to revitalize language teaching in order to address the impacts of colonization.
