The Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition launches Land, Water, Ocean, Us: A Canadian Ocean Literacy Strategy

Today, the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition (COLC) launched Land, Water, Ocean, Us: A Canadian Ocean Literacy Strategy, a collaborative framework for action to advance ocean literacy in Canada over the course of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). The Strategy is accompanied by the Implementation Plan: Pathways for Collaboration.

Started in 2010, the Seafloor Earthquake Array–Japan-Canada Cascadia Experiment (SeaJade) is a multiyear, two-phase collaboration involving the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), University of Victoria, Geological Survey of Canada and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Bringing marine science to Canadian classrooms

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) and Let’s Talk Science are proud to announce the release of four new classroom marine science kits available free of charge to K-9 teachers across Canada.

ONC’s K-12 Ocean Science Activity Developer, Monika Pelz, has compiled three new learning packages, each tailored to a different age group, to update current Lets Talk Science classroom kits. These include “Budding Biologist“ for Grades K-3; “Wonders of Weather” for Grades 4-6; and “Tectonic Rocks" for Grades 7-9.  All of them explore their respective topics through a marine science lens.

VENUS Observatory Maintenance Expedition: October 2013

A week long ONC maintenance expedition in October was dedicated to servicing systems on the VENUS Observatory. It was conducted on board the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Vector. Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) services were provided by Canpac Divers Inc., operators of the ROV Oceanic Explorer.

Falkor Expedition Wraps Up

Our month-long cruise to study low-oxygen zones in the Salish Sea and coastal waters off Vancouver Island has come to an end. The R/V Falkor docked in Victoria at Ogden Point Wednesday September 18 for demobilization. As our science and support teams regain their land legs, the Falkor is heading south to study an underwater volcano off the Oregon coast.

First annual check-up for the Arctic observatory

Just home from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, our engineering and outreach team reports successful maintenance and upgrades to the shore station and cabled undersea platform resting on the Arctic Ocean seafloor. Highlights of the trip included visits with Kiilinik School and the community. More details to come, as the community observatory approaches its first birthday on 29 September 2013.

New Website Launched

Our Oceannetworks.ca website has a new look, with the launch of our new brand and streamlined website. The new site includes content from our previous oceannetworks.ca, onccee.ca, VENUS and NEPTUNE websites. The former oceannetworks.ca and onccee.ca websites have now been taken offline, while the VENUS and NEPTUNE sites will remain online for a while longer. Eventually, all sites and data access facilities will be merged under oceannetworks.ca.

ONC and Schmidt Ocean Institute Team Up

The University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) and the Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) are undertaking an expedition on board the $62-million research vessel Falkor, with researchers from Canadian universities studying low-oxygen, acidic waters that form naturally off the coast of Vancouver Island.

Nicolai Bailly – Up and Coming Underwater Acoustics Engineer

One of our key mandates at Ocean Networks Canada is to find and encourage highly qualified personnel to sustain and advance ocean industry. At the Centre of Innovation, these young professionals-in-training come from a wide range of disciplines in engineering and science.

In September 2012, U Vic electrical engineering student Nicolai Bailly was brought on board to help develop the world’s first very low frequency (VLF) digital hydrophone calibration system.

Fraser River Plume

The Fraser River reaches the ocean near Vancouver, and there the fresh water it carries mixes with ocean water to form a thin plume of buoyant brackish water, which according to one oceanographer is the “showpiece of the Strait of Georgia.” Oceanographers have been studying the Fraser River plume since at least the 1960s, but more recently, VENUS has installed a radar system to measure the surface currents in this region.

Listening to Deep Ocean Whales

Passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals is a growing research theme on both the VENUS and NEPTUNE observatories. University of Victoria Co-op student Jasper Kanes works with the Ocean Networks Canada Innovation Centre (formerly Centre for Enterprise and Engagement, ONCCEE) to process passive acoustic data from their technology demonstrations. Together with John Dorocicz, Acoustic Systems Developer, the two “listeners” publicize the highlights from these data within relevant research communities.

Responding to a failure of an array power connector on the VENUS Strait of Georgia in early fall 2012, a joint team of engineers from Ocean Networks Canada and OceanWorks Int’l have spent a week (Feb 5-9) aboard CS Wave Venture recovering, repairing, testing and redeploying the VENUS primary sub-sea infrastructure in the Strait of Georgia.
