A spectrometer is a device that forms a spectrum, often utilizing the phenomenon of dispersion. In optical spectroscopy, in particular, spectrometers show the intensity of light as a function of wavelength or of frequency. In addition, these devices are utilized to measure luminescence of emission spectra including information on intensity and direction from light pulses. In the case of underwater spectrometers, these instruments mainly focus on bioluminescence emissions and measuring the spectrum of absorption in water.
