Ocean Networks Canada was very active at this fall’s MTS/IEEE Oceans meeting held in sunny San Diego, California, from 23 to 26 September.
The annual OCEANS conference is jointly sponsored by the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (IEEE/OES) and the Marine Technology Society (MTS). This international meeting is a major forum for scientists, engineers and those with an interest in the oceans to exchange their knowledge regarding the future of the world’s oceans, and showcase the latest oceanographic technology.
From Marine Operations to Data Infrastructure, Science to Sensor & Instrument Technology: the ONC delegation included eight attendees from across the organization, plus key collaborators Alexandra Branzan Albu (Associate Professor, UVic Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Hannan Lohrasbi (PhD Candidate, UVic Electrical and Computer Engineering).
The group gave a total of seven presentations on ONC-related topics (see below) and also hosted a popular booth in the exhibit hall. Representatives from the Canadian Consulate in San Diego joined the booth with a display promoting Canadian industry collaborations.
Networking was big on the week’s agenda. Tom Dakin, Business Development Officer with the ONC Innovation Centre, took advantage of the meeting to foster new and existing relationships with industry partners. Engineers with the Marine Operations team—Jarrett Little, Jonathon Miller and Reece Hasanen—engaged in fruitful dialogue with ONC’s instrument manufacturers.
On Friday following the meeting, Benoît Pirenne, Reyna Jenkyns and Maia Hoeberechts visited the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at its spectacular location overlooking La Jolla Cove to meet with members of the Cyber Infrastructure team for the US Ocean Observatories Initiative.
“All in all, a busy and productive week for all,” reflected Maia Hoeberechts, Associate Director of User Engagement at ONC
Conference comes to Canada in 2014
Under the theme “Where Challenge Becomes Opportunity,” Oceans 14 MTS/IEEE will be held next September in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
