Addressing climate change coast to coast
Overview
The Conference of the Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is taking place in Paris from 30 November to 11 December, 2015. Decision-makers from across the globe will be coming together to make commitments to reduce the impact of human activity on our global environment. Ocean science will be a critical part of the discussion, recognizing the important role that oceans play, not only in supporting life but also in mitigating some of the effects of climate change. On 4 December, the [Global Ocean Forum](http://globaloceanforum.com/), with over three dozen collaborating partners, is organizing [Oceans Day at COP21](https://globaloceanforumdotcom.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/oceans-day-pre-final-program1.pdf) in Paris. The purpose of this brief is to provide an introduction to the importance of oceans in climate change and to introduce the coordinating capacity of the Consortium of Canadian Ocean Research Universities (CCORU) as a source of expert advice for Canadian policy makers. INCISE 2016 gathers the international submarine canyon community
Overview
Imagine the Grand Canyon, submerged underwater. Now multiply that by 10,000. That’s how many underwater canyons have been identified in the global ocean over the last decade. But while the scientific exploration of canyons advances, so does the human footprint. Increased demand for energy, minerals and fisheries makes it all the more urgent for us to understand and protect these dynamic ecosystems before they are altered or damaged by these human impacts. This summer, an international community of submarine canyon scientists gathered in Victoria, British Columbia to present state-of-the-art research and discuss new technology, marine policy and conservation. From 25-27 July, Ocean Networks Canada hosted the third INCISE International Submarine Canyon Symposium, the first to be held in North America.
ONC puts deep on display at world marine biodiversity conference
Overview
Ocean Networks Canada’s (ONC) extensive archive of deep-sea video imagery, time-series data sets, and live underwater video cameras from sites in the northeast Pacific and Arctic oceans were on full display from 13-16 May at the fourth World Conference on Marine Biodiversity (WCMB) in Montreal. [![fabio-wcmb.jpg](https://cdn.onc-prod.intergalactic.space/fabio_wcmb_75b1e9f3c0.jpg)](https://twitter.com/Ocean_Networks/status/996783007200526337) “Effective ocean management requires knowledge of the diversity, distribution, and abundance of marine life in the ocean—from microbes to zooplankton to fish,” says ONC chief scientist Kim Juniper, who was co-chair of the WCMB organizing committee and a member of the conference’s science committee. “This information, as well as knowledge about species interactions, improves our understanding of ocean health and ecosystems both in the water column and on the seafloor, and how the system responds to change.” At WCMB, ONC metadata specialist Chris Adams and ONC staff scientist Fabio De Leo presented research posters, communicated science, and performed data demonstrations from more than 350 remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dive videos filmed over the past 12 years. ONC staff also showcased ONC biodiversity video highlights and Oceans 2.0 data plots on large monitors at ONC’s popular booth on the conference floor.
An Indigenous Ocean Governance Forum at OceanObs’19 in Hawaii

Bringing Indigenous knowledge to the table at OceanObs’19
Overview
The United Nations General Assembly recently proclaimed 2021-2030 as the [Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development](https://www.oceandecade.org) to generate the knowledge, data, science, infrastructure and partnerships needed to inform policies for a well-functioning ocean. What better time to engage the first stewards of the ocean—the Indigenous peoples of the world—in the conversation.
