#ONCabyss Summer 2025 Ocean Expedition
Watch the ocean expedition livestream May 25 - June 5

Leg 1 of the three-part #ONCabyss Summer 2025 Expedition has concluded.

ONC worked with Canpac Marine Services and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCGS) in a two-ship operation to service the North East Pacific Time-series Undersea Networked Experiment (NEPTUNE) observatory, off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

From aboard the motor vessel (M/V) Canpac Valour, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Mantis acted as the hands and eyes of the operation, assisting in the deployment of new scientific instruments, such as the vertical profiler system.

Science work aboard the CCGS John P. Tully included CTD casts at Barkley Canyon, Endeavour and Cascadia research sites to calibrate ONC’s sensor systems and support Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) scientific priorities. Gravity cores (sediment samples) for Natural Resources Canada were also collected during this expedition, along with research of hydrothermal vents and spreading centre activity near Endeavour’s hydrothermal vents.
