Community observatories are scaled-down versions of ONC’s existing major observatories (i.e. NEPTUNE’s offshore 850 kilometre loop and VENUS in Saanich Inlet). These simplified ocean observing systems can be deployed, operated, and maintained by small teams using standard coastal vessels.
The ONC team works closely with community members on infrastructure planning and development, and to ensure ocean data is easy to access and understand.
Available through Oceans 3.0, the data collected through community observatories complements existing marine research activities and provides opportunities for local ocean education programs.
